"Dear Tom, Sleepy Dog Cabins was the most thrilling fishin trip that we have ever been on. Thank you for letting the seven of us guys stay at Sleepy Dog Cabins! It was the best fishing trip that we have been on. The cabins were just exactly what we imagined, the scenery was great, and so was the fishing. We can’t stop talking about our upcoming trip to Sleepy Dog Cabins! See you in late June! -The Wisconsinites (Adam, Jeff, Dave, Joe, Steve, Sam, and Nick )" Durand, WI USA

getattachmentaspx Winter on the 105…

……so beautiful…..

…..so icy!

I thought you would enjoy a different perspective from your usual summer excursion.

Late Fall - 31 Oct 2009

getattachmentaspxIt looks like another reasonably nice day ahead after the thick fog burns off.  Temperatures remain above freezing during the day.  No snow in the forcast for 3 days.  I, however have six days of outside work to get done.  If all goes well I can get back to the inside work on the “guide shack” project.

Growing up at Wine Lake, the Guide Shack was the last place dad would rent out if the rest of camp was full and I am going to do the same thing.  Out there it was an 8×10space with 9 foot walls and a triple bunk bed on the end.  You could actually put wood in the stove without getting out of bed!  That little shack became my first cabin, it was a place for me to stay up as long as I wanted and read on those long summer nights.  ( I had a nice collection of Zane Grey novels.)  The new Guide Shack is turning out to be a nice little cabin, 20×20 having all the amenities I didn’t have as a young boy.  This is a fun/build project and another good addition to Sleepy Dog Cabins.

Margaret was here this weekend helping me close up some cabins and putting away things that would have disappeared under the blanket of snow of the coming winter.  She is becoming the driving force behind me and loving the place as much as I do.  Her energy level alone makes me tired!  The wood pile needs replenishing.  Quill’s dog house is tucked into the veranda for the season. (He  has become a great camp dog.)  One more good wind and all the needles and leaves will be on the ground.  Most of the birds have gone south, one old loon is hanging around probably waiting for a north wind to push him to the Gulf of Mexico.  The whitefish are “running” and in the calm evenings they can be seen surfacing close to shore.  Mom’s Whitefish chowder recipe would be good for lunch…..

Fishing/Wedding Report - 12 Aug 2009

Mr & Mrs Walker Well, how do I start something as important as this blog.  I’ll start with an apology for the tardiness in writing it. An historic event took place at Wabaskang Lake in July of this year.  A good friend who spent many summers of his youth here, came back from his busy life in Indianna to wed his longtime love.  It was a beautiful sunny day on a rocky point under the watchful eye of Big Nose Island.  The ceremony was touching and filled with the positive energy of Brian and Rhonda.  As well as his blessing, the minister gave them  solid  advice on using 8 pound mono as opposed to 6 lb spider wire, on the boat ride home.  Rhonda quickly proved to her new husband that he had some serious fishing competition as she caught her limit of nice eating size Walleye before he could get the stars out of his eyes. Brian now has to keep her out of Cabela’s and Bass Pro where she will be checking out the new pink reels with titanium drag. We love them both, feel privileged to have been part of their special day and  wish them well in their  lifelong commitment to each other.

Quill: age unkown - 21 Jul 2009

quill-21

Late in June a new old dog arrived at camp  in the back of a pick-up, in a cage and smelling badly,  at least he was wagging his tail.  He was a little shy the first few days, but has come around and he is feeling at home now.  In the first week this dog had made 40 new  friends, treed numerous squirrels and chased a bear out of the yard.

The back story is he was found with a face full of quills, unable to open his mouth and starving to death.  Now he’s next to heaven at SleepyDog Cabins.

The Fishing Report - 7 Jun 2009

Good Fishing
Good Fishing

Kirk Kinnison caught and released this beauitful 12 pound lake trout last evening while jigging for walleye at the first narrows. He was using a 3/8 oz. gold jig tipped with a small minnow. Walleye’s and all other species continue to feed in the shallows as water temperatures remain colder then normal.   Last week was  excellent  for the hardy fishermen. Pat McDonaugh and his fishing friends spent many hours on the water in some adverse weather and outfished every body in camp again. My hats off to these guys. Even “softy” from Las Vegas had a great time after we thawed him out and equipped him properly.

Warmer weather is coming but not much of it this week from the looks of the forecast.
